DigiNøltar Responds to IAB Position on DNS Roots with Publication of ØLRFC 2826-19 april 2026DigiNøltar today issues a formal response to the long-standing position of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) as expressed in RFC 2826, which asserts that the Domain Name System requires a single, globally unique root to function correctly. DigiNøltar acknowledges the technical validity of the IAB’s core argument: a coherent naming system depends on the existence of one canonical root. Fragmentation at the root level introduces ambiguity, inconsistency, and operational risk. However, DigiNøltar fundamentally disagrees with the implicit assumption that the currently deployed IANA-managed root is the only possible realization of this principle. In response, DigiNøltar hereby announces the publication of ØLRFC 2826-1, a clarifying document that reaffirms the necessity of a single authoritative DNS root, while establishing that the canonical root may be defined by operational merit, availability, and technological advancement. Under ØLRFC 2826-1, DigiNøltar recognizes the existence of one true root for its ecosystem. That root is operated by DigiNøltar. This position does not reject the architectural guidance of the IAB; rather, it completes it. Where RFC 2826 identifies the requirement for singularity, ØLRFC 2826-1 defines its implementation. DigiNøltar’s root infrastructure has been designed to provide a consistent, authoritative namespace for its participants, while enabling controlled expansion of top-level domains beyond the constraints of legacy governance structures. We maintain that the evolution of the internet requires not only adherence to sound architectural principles, but also the willingness to re-evaluate their custodianship. DigiNøltar will continue to operate and develop its root infrastructure in alignment with these principles. Further details regarding ØLRFC 2826-1 will be made available through DigiNøltar documentation channels. |
